A New Conversation: Global Community and Human Security.

San Diego's leading opinion makers and experts on conflict, human rights, peacekeeping and the role of the press discussed "Global Community and Human Security" on Thursday, September 5, 2002 at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice at the University of San Diego.

The panel discussion, sponsored by Voices of Women, was moderated by VOW founder and president Jenni Prisk. UCSD-TV taped the event and, in the weeks that followed, it was viewed by eight million people.

Panelists for 'A New Conversation:  Global Community & Human Security'

PANELISTS:

  • Dr. Peter Cowhey, Director of the University of California's Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation and an expert on foreign policy and political economy.

  • Dr. Joyce Neu, Executive Director of the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice, addressed issues of intercultural communication and the need for non-violent conflict resolution.

  • Tony Perry, San Diego Bureau Chief of the Los Angeles Times, spoke on the importance of openness and integrity in the press when reporting on global issues.

  • Margo Dockendorf, attorney, author, and San Diego president of the World Federalist Association, addressed the role of the United States in global governance and as international peacekeeper.

Following the panelists' presentations and Q&A, guests mingled with speakers and enjoyed light refreshments at a reception hosted by Voices of Women.

"A New Conversation: Global Community and Human Security" received generous underwriting from Ellen Revelle and additional support from DPR Construction. Net proceeds benefited the "Back to School for Afghan Children" project sponsored by the San Diego chapter of the United Nations Association.
