Women Trailblazers

Christina Prejean

Christina Prejean

Hello Listeners,

August 26 is an auspicious date on which to launch our next interview. While Charles Thurber patented a typewriter on this day many years ago, it’s not where our minds are going.

On August 26, 1920, the long battle for the vote for women was won through the ratification of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. This was a huge success for the women’s suffrage movement, although sadly African American women and men had to wait until the 1960s.

Women have been serving fully in the military in this country since the 1970’s, and we thought it fitting to feature another of our military interviews. We are pleased to share the story of Captain Christina Prejean, who is an amazing woman and champion of progress.

Christina served as an Officer in the United States Air Force for six years, including a one year tour in Kabul, Afghanistan. While serving on Active Duty, Christina received her Master’s Degree in Public Administration from the University of Oklahoma. In 2016, she was awarded her degree in law from the University of San Diego.

She now fights for women in the military through the pro bono organization Protect Our Defenders. We feel sure that you will be as impressed with Christina as we are and hope you enjoy her interview.

Oh, and by the way, August 26 is Mother Teresa’s birthday. That alone makes it a date to remember!

Kyleanne Hunter

Kyleanne Hunter

Greetings Listeners,

In two days, the United States will celebrate the Fourth of July, its Independence Day. This national holiday commemorates the separation of the thirteen colonies from the British Empire. Many brave Americans have fought since then to ensure freedom in this land.

We can think of no better way to honor this holiday than to share the story of Kyleanne Hunter, a Ret. US Marine Corps officer who served multiple combat tours.

Hunter was one of the first AH-W1 “Super Cobra” attack helicopter pilots and served for more than a decade. “I was an attack pilot. I was the first woman on the east coast,” she says. “It was a trailblazer-type experience. Definitely an experience being the first in something, which is never easy. It’s something that takes grit and determination.”

Today Hunter channels this grit into helping break down roadblocks women in the military face. Now one of her missions is fighting for gender equality in the armed forces. She is a PhD Candidate at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, University of Denver where her research focuses on women’s integration into Western militaries.

She is a dynamic woman with a passion for life and the pursuit of fairness.

Please listen in today to enjoy this podcast. This is part one of two for iVOW’s Women in the Military series.

We wish you all a fun, safe holiday.

Hello Listeners and Happy New Year!

We have been silent for a while, yet not idle! We took some downtime at the holidays to focus on this new year, which is turning out to be the Year of the Woman! iVOW is continuously sharing women’s strengths, disappointments and victories.

This year, you will hear more on how women overcome hardships and gender bias, and rise to the top of their fields. The first interview features Ret. US Marine Corps Officer Kyelanne Hunter, who was a Peace Researcher at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace & Justice at USD (IPJ). Kye is a woman of many talents who will inspire you with her comments on a variety of important issues. Please click here to listen to Kyelanne.

You will also hear the dulcet English tones of Kimberly Loh, who holds a master’s degree in negotiation & conflict resolution from Columbia University, and is a peace researcher at the IPJ. Her intelligent insights provide a sensory journey through her research work. Please click here to listen to Kimberly.

Their research briefs and work will be available online later in 2018 by clicking here.

Please stay tuned to iVOW. Pass our interviews onto the women and men in your life. Discuss them with your daughters and granddaughters. Be inspired to learn more about the issues.

2017 Women PeaceMakers

For eight weeks, four extraordinary global women peacemakers take up residence at the Joan B. Kroc Institute for Peace and Justice (IPJ.)

From September – November 2017 the women came from Afghanistan, The Gambia, The Philippines and Trinidad and Tobago.

iVOW had the privilege of interviewing them, and we are delighted to share their voices with you.  The adversities they face, the obstacles they overcome, and the integrity with which they fight for women’s rights and human rights will inspire you as it did us.

Listen while you’re working, walking, waiting, and wondering.  You’ll be changed.  And the world will seem a little bit smaller because these women have shared their worlds with you.

Can you believe it’s been one year since we launched iVOW? We can’t either, however, we are very excited that we have filled 12 months with voices of wisdom, warmth, and wit.

Darlene Shiley 2
As a gift to you, our listeners, we are replaying our first interview that inspired the launch of iVOW. Philanthropist Darlene Shiley is well-known in San Diego, however, you may not know very much about her youth, her role models, and her love for her deceased husband, Donald. Darlene waxes from philosophical to funny, from insightful to inspirational. You’ll enjoy hearing from her as much as we did.

So, stay tuned! We’re not going away! In fact we have a series of interviews lined up for the next 12 months. We would love to hear from you! If there is a topic you would like us to cover, please let us know.

Thank you for listening.
