
The speakers who represented the countries were: Gloria Oloya from Friends for Peace in Africa; Le Ly Hayslip of Vietnam, President of The Global Village Foundation, author of When Heaven and Earth Changed Places which subsequently became a movie directed by Oliver Stone; Fabiola Navarro, a Chilean attorney and human rights activist, living in the United States; and Shirley Apple Murphy of the South Dakota Tribe who has lived on the Sycuan Indian Reservation for 36 years.
Each woman spoke for 15 minutes about the state of Human Rights in her country. In some there was progress, in others a backsliding due to lack of government funding and education. Following the speeches, an actor from the San Diego community delivered a reading pertaining to the specific country. The actors were: Monique Gaffney, Robert Dahey, and Carla Navarro.
Voices of Women received donations from the audience and sent a check for $100 to each speaker's non-profit organization.
