Miko began the discussion by stating that the voices of women are and will be powerful in a dialogue for peace. 1.4 million people live in Gaza, and for a comparison, in Manhattan 24,000 people live in one square kilometer and in Gaza 74,000 people live in that same area. 70% are impoverished. Palestinians are not allowed to build a seaport or an airport. The Israelis have built a 30 foot high concrete wall. Gaza is surrounded by an electric fence on the Palestinian side. 6m Jews live free beside 5m Palestinians who are suppressed. Settlements in the West Bank are immoveable and make a Palestinian state impossible. A wall is being built between Israel and the West Bank. It will be 500 kms long and costs $1.5m per month.
Nader Elbanna spoke passionately about the possibility for peace and one state. However, there are severe difficulties. 8,000 Israeli settlers control the water rights of 1.3m Palestinians. 15,000 soldiers guard the Palestinians. The Palestinians have to speak up and seek justice.
Together, Nader and Miko raised $84,000 from US citizens for Wheelchairs for the Holy Land, 500 wheelchairs each for Israel and Palestine for children who have been maimed in the wars and bombings. The men are currently raising a further $80,000 for mixed schools and also plan a March of Millions where together they will rise up for peace in the region.
