At the School of International Relations & Pacific Studies (IR/PS), an audience of 50 people attended an enlightening presentation given by Danny Paz (a Masters graduate of IR/PS) of the nonprofit organization
The Long Way Home. Along with many other young volunteers, Danny is helping to build schools and homes in Guatemala out of used tires, plastic bottles and trash. The audience was fascinated by the video that Danny showed of the schools being built. First, trenches are dug, then the tires are stacked in them, and then they are filled with mud and cement to provide a firm foundation. The simple wall structures are filled with empty soda and water bottles that are in turn filled with trash. The ceiling also contains bottles, with the bases facing inside, to provide natural light.
